Goals

Based on previous research and the latest developments in theoretical linguistics, dialectology, dialectal lexicography, and dialectal geography, the objectives of this research project are as follows:

• Creation of an absolutely essential and, until now, missing scholarly reference work: an electronic database of Modern Greek diminutives, in accordance with the highest and most rigorous international standards
• Creation, for the first time in Greece, of an interactive atlas of Modern Greek diminutive suffixes, in line with the latest international technological developments
• The implementation in Greece of technologies developed for other languages
• Production of scientific papers and a collective volume
• Promotion of Greek cultural heritage through conference presentations, papers in scientific journals and collective volumes, and a dynamic website
• Promotion of dialectological research in Greece, by providing fully documented analyses of specific phenomena, based on a rich data corpus, in line with the latest scientific developments, and leading to new approaches to the mechanisms of language change and variation
• Enrichment of the interdisciplinary nature of the research through its integration with computer science and information technology, in the frame of the creation of the electronic database and the dialectal atlas of Modern Greek diminutives
• Support to young scientists with the aim of promoting a relatively neglected field of research —dialectology— and helping them acquire new research skills that will enhance their career prospects, and will foster the development of new techniques and products
